Accessibility
A visitor experience that we can all enjoy together
At Delapré Abbey, we are committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive experience for all our visitors. We have worked carefully to adapt our historic spaces, gardens, and restaurants so that everyone can enjoy the Abbey and its surroundings. We recognise that accessibility goes beyond physical access—it encompasses communication, participation, and ensuring that all visitors feel valued and supported.
If you have any questions, doubts, or concerns about accessibility at Delapré Abbey, including the grounds and our onsite restaurants, The Orangery and Hibiscus, please contact our Visitor Welcome team at info@delapreabbey.org or by phone on 01604 760817. We encourage visitors to raise any accessibility concerns prior to your visit and, where necessary for safety, to be accompanied by a carer or able-bodied companion.
Mobility Access
The Abbey is spread over several levels, and we have installed wheelchair-accessible lifts and ramps where possible. Manual wheelchairs are available for loan on site, and staff and volunteers can provide guidance on tight spaces or uneven floors. Please note that mobility scooters are not permitted inside the house.
While the Walled Garden and main external paths are accessible, the wider parkland and unofficial pathways may be uneven or muddy and are not suitable for all visitors.
Ample seating is available throughout the Abbey, restaurants, and gardens.
If you have any concerns or questions about mobility access, please do not hesitate to contact our Visitor Welcome team.
Hearing and Visual Access
We provide audio induction loops for visitors with hearing impairments.
Large-print room guides are available on both white and yellow paper, and guides are offered in multiple languages, including English, Albanian, Polish, Arabic, Dari, and Romanian.
At present, braille materials are not available, but our team is happy to provide additional support as needed.
Assistance Dogs
All service dogs are welcome in inside the Abbey and restaurants.
Accessible Toilets and Changing Spaces
We have accessible toilet cubicles available by The Orangery café, as well as on the first floor of the Abbey. Dedicated changing facilities can be found both in the Stable Block and café toilets.
If you have any queries or concerns about these spaces, please contact our Visitor Welcome team.
Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion
Delapré Abbey is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion across every aspect of our organisation. Our staff and volunteers receive training to ensure that support is consistently available, and we continue to review and improve our practices to break down barriers to participation. Accessibility and inclusion are embedded not just in the physical spaces of the Abbey, but also in our public programmes, events, and visitor communications, ensuring that everyone can fully enjoy and engage with our heritage, gardens, and community activities.
