Cycling with Confidence

Would you dream of cycling to work, the local shops, or for everyday errands, but find yourself lacking the confidence to do so? Are you eager to learn in a welcoming environment, connect with fellow cyclists, and receive a recycled Bike or a £100 voucher towards a new bike.

Cycling with Confidence is proudly presented as part of the Active Quarter partnership, funded by the Department for Transport through West Northamptonshire Council. This initiative is specifically designed for individuals residing in West Northamptonshire who can ride a bike but seek an extra boost of confidence for their everyday cycling journeys. The project is scheduled to run from November 2023 to December 2023 and is offered completely free of charge to participants. As an added incentive, you’ll have the opportunity to receive a £100 gift voucher or even a free bike upon completion.

We have arranged venues across West Northamptonshire to ensure accessibility for all participants. If you are a large organisation we can accommodate to a location easily assessable to you.

Don’t have a bike? No worries. If you don’t have access to a bicycle, we can either lend you a refurbished bike or help you find a suitable one to borrow from a friend.

The Bakelife program is made up of three stages:

Stage 1 Bike Check – Half -hour

  • Half hour session: Cycle check and maintenance by a qualified mechanic. If you don’t have a bike we will check your requirements eg hight to find you a suitable refurbished bike to borrow and keep at the end if required.

State 2 Cycle confidence training – Four hour session

  • Three-hour session in an empty car park/hard surface area to practice cycle control skills such as turning and slow cycling, tips on how to cycle safety.
  • One hour session on a led cycle ride (route explained before leaving)

Stage 3 Learn to fix – One Hour session

  • One-hour session to learn to fix and maintain your bike: e.g pump up tyres, puncture repairs, safety checks, how to lock securely etc.

All stages will be completed by the end of December 2023. Upon completion of all stages, each participant will receive a £100 voucher that can be used to purchase cycle security and safety equipment or contribute toward a new bike, including recycled bikes from Delapre Bike Dr. Additionally, participants will receive cycling goodies throughout the three-stage journey to enhance the safety, ease, and comfort of their cycling trips.

Can’t Cycle But Interested?

Please let us know. While this programme is designed for individuals who can already cycle but lack confidence for daily trips, we may offer “learn to cycle” training and consider your inclusion in Bike Life if spaces are available.

Interested – But You Have a Disability?

Inform us, as we aim to make this programme as inclusive as possible. Depending on your disability and ability, we will work to adapt the sessions to your needs. If necessary, we will explore alternatives to ensure that everyone can experience the joy of cycling. After all, as the charity Wheels for Wellbeing reminds us, cycling should be accessible to all.
