Cutting the cake at your wedding is up there with throwing the bouquet and the first dance – and this year one Northampton bakery is going the extra mile to ensure a happy couple have their cake and eat it.
Family-run Gardners Bakery on Kingsthorpe High Street – which has been making celebration cakes for birthdays, anniversaries, wedding and christenings for more than 100 years – is offering a key worker couple a £300 wedding cake as part of a fabulous competition.
The Wedding with Thanks competition, which will see one lucky couple say ‘I do’ next year, has been organised by Delapré Abbey to say thanks to a carer, key or essential worker in Northamptonshire who has gone above and beyond during the coronavirus crisis.
The prize package includes everything for a wedding of your dreams, from wedding rings and stationery to a hair stylist for the bride – as well as a fabulous three-tier wedding cake from the Harborough Road bakery.
Since 1910, Gardners has been baking a fantastic selection of modern, traditional and contemporary wedding cakes from flavoured sponges and sweet fillings to traditional fruit, chocolate and madeira. It can even offer egg-free sponges, frangipane boats and shortbread ducks.
Famous locally for its tasty angel cake, frangipane ducks and marmite bread, owner Helen Gardner still honours recipes handed down to her from family founder James Gardner.
Training in Birmingham she mastered the art of bespoke cakes and learnt the ropes from her dad and grandad. Today, the fifth generation is supporting the family business.
“It’s the way we move with the times, and the new generations coming into the business with new ideas that has helped us succeed. We feel the legacy will carry on for years to come thanks to our loyal customers,” says Helen.
“We enjoy playing our part in the lives of Northamptonshire residents by creating personalised and bespoke cakes for everyone. Our business is 110 years old this year, and we are delighted to take part in Wedding with Thanks and help a couple to create their day and give back to the winners.
“Getting married is one of the biggest days of your life. It should be memorable and special to the couple down to the last detail.”
